School Production 'Let It Shine'

The Fabulous Room 5 team proved to be the best till last in preforming Daniel and the Lions in our school production.
What convincing lions the boys made. Our lights were shining! An exciting end to another busy term. A big thank you to Alanah, Malachi's Mum who choreographed the final dance ' He Lives in You', and to parents who helped make and gather costumes; took photos and supervised children on the nights of our performances.

Beatrix Potter- Peter Rabbit
In our last week we enjoyed listening to Peter Rabbit stories on U tube that linked into our algebra topic of making and repeating a three element pattern. We each made a pattern of vegetables from Mr Mc Gregor's garden.
Explore The World of Beatrix Potter this holiday and enjoy the clips of Beatix Potter on U tube. (Links on the right of the page)

After play Mr Esler came to Room 5 .I got to play with lots of stuff. It was fun too. I got to try magnets and there was lots of equipment.
Sam W
After play Mr Esler came into Room 5. The best part that I loved was the gravity part because he told us how much gravity we need. The magnet one was cool too. I liked trying to pick up the fish. I liked doing the iron sand magnet activity because I made a sand house out of it.
Cole R

Here are some interesting facts Mr Esler talked about.
Without gravity the world would explode.

  • That plants and spiders in space don’t know where to grow or in what direction to spin their webs.
  • That everything that drops falls directly to the centre of gravity which is in the centre of the earth.
  • That the furtherst people have ever dug down into the earth  is 3000m because it gets to hot and there is no air.
  • Mr Esler showed us the shape of cars today can turn corners because of their shape, more easily than the vintage car.

Challenge
We tested our centre of gravity by putting kneeling on the ground. putting our elbows together and placing a cotton reel at the end of our fingers on the ground; and then placing our hands behind our back.  We then we tried to lean over and rest our forehead on the cotton reel without falling over. Try this at home.

We slso explored pivots and where the work happens in a variety of gadgets and utensils.
Lastly we explored a veriety  of activities to try with magnets.

Wacky House Colour Day
Tim's Grandads prize giant pumpkin that weighs 65kgs.
The 'Duck Song' was a fun poem to finish the term with and was requested to be placed on the blog. The lyrics can be found in your poetry book to sing along with the clip.
There are more activities now on Study Ladder to enjoy over the holidays along with some other links.

Measurement- Capacity and Volume
In the last weeks of the term we have been learning about capacity and volume. We used small plastic dinosaurs to measure the capacity of containers. We discovered that a number of different shaped containers can contain the same number of dinosaurs. This unit gave many opportunities for us to develop our counting strategies as we counted and compared the capacity of the containers as measured by dinosaurs.
As part of our experiences we have constructed cylinders to fit certain numbers of toy dinosaurs.

Our home task this holiday

is to make a paper or cardboard cylinder that fits 20 small objects (for example; pebbles, toothpicks or bottle tops). Your child will need paper or light card (the side of an old cereal box would be good), scissors and cellotape and they will be keen to show you what to do.

Snapshots of Term 1

Here are a few pics to enjoy of the fabulous Room five boys during the term. The butterfly hatched and survived to be set free. The Queens Park visit which included the visiting Tuatarium was a highlight.
Just today we enjoyed our hockey last session with Tony and showed our talents in dribbling a ball with a hockey stick. Fr Hook dropped in this afternoon to sing some songs including the favourite " If Christ is a Vessel". Lastly we started painting our frogs.
All in all a busy and exciting term.

E-ako Maths

This week we explored E-ako a maths website which is free to use.  The link has been included on the right of this blog along with Study Ladder. It has been pleasing to see the enjoyment and results from students working on Study Ladder both during class and while at home.
  • e-ako maths is a resource created to support students developing a sound knowledge and understanding of place value, basic facts and fractions.
  • Each student has their own account so that they can explore the material at their own pace. These have been pasted along with username and password in front of our Reading Diaries.
  • e-ako maths provides a pathway of interactive learning modules (e-ako) for students to work through.
  • Each e-ako contains both teaching screens and interactive elements for students to complete. These interactive elements include matching tasks, multiple choice questions, and short answer questions.
  • Enjoy
